Blessed 2026!
The new year came so quickly with a bang, and the month of January has almost ended!
I want to share the following passage of Scripture to encourage and challenge us for this year.

A JOYOUS CHRISTMAS TO YOU!
Christ, the Light of the world, has come to bring us joy, faith, peace and hope!
Isaac Watts a 17th century British hymn writer tweaked Psalm 98 into a Christmas carol when he wrote the all- time favourite, Joy to the World!

31 October 1517 is remembered by Christians as the date of the Protestant Reformation and the subsequent birth of the Protestant Church.
The Reformation Day, like Easter and Christmas, are placed in the Christian calendar, to enable us to remember the what, the when, the where, the how and why of these significant events.

In my recent devotion on Jeremiah 32:17, I was greatly encouraged by God¡¯s precious reminder that he alone is sovereign and almighty! Even if the challenges are great, and, at that time I was going through some challenges, the Lord used these words to focus on him, and not on the problems.

It is such a joy to know that you and I are rooted and grounded in God¡¯s love, just as Paul had written more than 2000 years ago:
¡°That according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith ¨C that you being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with

21st August 2025 was Founders¡¯ Day and Homecoming Day! It was a special day for SBC alumni as it was a day set aside for them to ¡®come home¡¯!
It was also special because it was combined with Founders¡¯ Day ¨C the day set aside to remember our Founding Fathers, who under God¡¯s guidance, established the Singapore Bible College.

This is the Day that the LORD has made! Let us rejoice and be glad in it!
We are now into the second half of 2025! Where did the past 6 months go? The year has moved so rapidly that we were not even aware that it had come and gone, just as the saying goes – ¡°time and tide waits for no man¡±!

I want to share some thoughts from my recent devotion based on an ancient hymn ¨C Be Still My Soul. This hymn was first written in German in the 18th century during the time of a movement called Pietism that impacted Germany, after the decline of the Reformation.

The Lord Is Risen! Hallelujah!
¡°Yet not I but through Christ in me¡±! How amazing and how wonderful this truth is because of the death and triumphant resurrection of Jesus the Christ, the Son of the living God!
Let¡¯s go forth today and every day, to live in the light and hope of Jesus¡¯ resurrection!

We are in the season of Lent. I thank God that Lent is included in the Church calendar for Christians around the world to take a deep hard look at ourselves, in the light of God¡¯s great love for mankind, and the sufferings that Christ underwent for our salvation.

I have been meditating on John chapter 13 for the past weeks and I would like to share with you some of my reflections especially regarding the full extent of God¡¯s love in Christ, and the way he demonstrated this to his beloved disciples.

I cannot help but echo the first two stanzas of Isaac Watts¡¯ (AD 1674-1748) hymn as we enter this new year:
O God our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,
Our shelter from the stormy blast,
And our eternal home.
Under the shadow of Thy throne,
Thy saints have dwelt secure,
Sufficient is Thine arm alone,
And our defense is sure.

We are grateful to God for this season of Advent! I have been meditating on the book of Titus where Paul instructs Titus to teach sound doctrine that will lead to right living. In chapter 2, after giving instructions of how different family members in a household should live and thereby adorn Christ and make the gospel beautiful, Paul commands Titus to teach the gospel with authority by summarizing the contents of the gospel in a succinct and powerful manner.

The idea of an indigenous mission was conceived at the Singapore General Hospital in 1960! My late father, Dr G D James, had sustained a massive heart attack and was recuperating in the hospital when the Lord gave him a vision.
He saw thousands, if not millions of souls, heading for a Christless eternity. He heeded that vision and upon his recovery he established the Malaysia Evangelistic Fellowship, which was later changed to Asia Evangelistic Fellowship (AEF).

As we approach Reformation Day, I can¡¯t help but think of how it all began!
On 31 October 1517, Martin Luther nailed the 95 Theses on the door of
Whittenburg Church in Germany that set the Reformation in Europe in motion,
resulting in the split of the One Holy Catholic Apostolic Church.

Let us run this race with intentionality and purpose¡
Let us run, and not be weary, let us walk and not faint because He,
the everlasting God, who pours his strength into our weak and frail
bodies, he will cheer us on and will be with us till the very end!
(Isaiah 40:31)

This is the day that the Lord has made, we will rejoice and be glad in it! August has been a month of events and new beginnings! Many Asian nations celebrated their Independence Day, including Singapore which celebrated 59
years of peace, stability and freedom of religion.

We struggle and strive to want to be a follower and a fisherman for Christ through our human efforts and through our man-made structures, programs and policies.

As we continue in our journey together as pilgrims in this path of discipleship, the Lord Jesus is our Shepherd and Guide. Let us turn our attention to Psalm 1 on how blessed it is to walk with God, meditate on His truths, do the right thing and delight in His Word.

We rejoice and give thanks to our great and awesome God for his love, faithfulness and everlasting mercies to the Singapore Bible College over these past 72 years!
On the 4th of May SBC celebrated her 71st graduation ceremony with 107 students who graduated from the 4 Schools and Advanced Studies, with Bachelors, Masters and Doctoral degrees!

Let me share some nuggets I reread from Scripture this week. Jesus taught his disciples precious truths and drew amazing lessons from his Sermon on the Mount (Matthew chapters 5-7).

Blessed Easter! Our Lord is Risen! Hallelujah!
For the past several weeks of Lent, leading to Easter, in meditating on Christ and the Cross, my heart is filled with gratitude even as I once again survey the wondrous cross on which the Prince of Glory died!

I have been thinking about the importance of prayer and the template Jesus gave his disciples in Matthew 6:9-13. As we examine our private and corporate prayers, very often they are for physical things more than for spiritual. We seldom ask God to help us live holy and blameless lives, lives of integrity that please our LORD! Often it¡¯s all about – Give us this day our daily bread!?
Yes, we must ask God for the things we need and thank him for his bountiful provision daily – our daily bread, our daily safety, our daily health, our daily well-being. But shouldn¡¯t we also ask for our spiritual welfare?

We have just welcomed the new year and soon we will be celebrating the Lunar New Year! As we focus on our walk with the Lord this year, l would like to share an article that Pastor Edmund Chan wrote recently to his friends and mentees on Spiritual Dryness. In this article Pastor Ed speaks of the “paradox of an outward busyness and an inward spiritual barrenness which is worrisome”. We may seem to be bearing much fruit but in actuality we may be truly barren.

2024! What will it look like for each of us? Maybe for some it will be celebration of weddings, promotions, awards, either your own, your children¡¯s, or even your grandchildren¡¯s! For some others it may be new ministries, new mission fields, transitions and retirement. Yet for others it could be challenging times ahead …..

As I meditated on these truths, verse 29 jumped out for me! We too like Paul, must ¡®toil¡¯ and struggle with the work that God has entrusted to us. We must work hard and do all that we can in our service to God. But the wonderful truth is that the energy that comes to us as we toil, is not ours! It is from God! It is God in Christ……
