Morning visit to Gutenberg Museum then after lunch, we go to Worms, thought to be one of the oldest towns in Germany. We visit the world¡¯s largest Memorial to the Reformation and the Church of the Holy Trinity, which is believed to be the place where the decisive hearing took place. We tour St. Peter¡¯s Cathedral, one of the most exquisite examples of Romanesque architecture. The Cathedral was the scene of several milestones of European history. In 1048, Bruno of Egisheim-Dagsburg was elected pope Leo IX here and in 1521, Martin Luther was summoned by emperor Charles V to recant his teachings before the Diet of Worms, a historic assembly that was to change the history of Christianity. Behind the cathedral in the Heylshof Park marks a plaque on the ground the place where Luther made his brave declaration. Overnight Worms (L/D)
Today we go to Wertheim Village for full day shopping and own lunch, then continue our journey to overnight at Rothenburg ob der Tauber. After dinner we enjoy a special evening tour with a local Night Watchman. The Night Watchman takes you on a journey into medieval everyday life. As the guardian of the old town, he shares his adventures, the customs of Rothenburg¡¯s citizens, and stories from the Thirty Years¡¯ War, when General Tilly captured the city. At Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber take a glimpse into the Middle Ages in perhaps the most famous town on the ¡°Romantik Road¡± – a nearly intact medieval walled city without a single modern building within. Tour the city to view the Rathaus, the Glockenspiel and St. Jakob¡¯s church with its famous altar carving by Tilman Riemenschneider and the Castle Gardens. Leisure time to stroll the cobblestone lanes with their wonderful variety of shops. K?the Wolfahrt¡¯s year-round Christmas Village is a must! Walk along the medieval walls that encircle the town or just relax and enjoy this quiet town. After late lunch, travel to Coburg for Overnight (B/D)
Following breakfast you visit the famous Veste Coburg, the fortress where Luther took refuge and lived during the Augsburg Confession. While visiting the castle we¡¯ll see the Luther Room, the art treasures in the various collections and the royal building with the Luther Chapel. The Veste Coburg is one of the largest and most well-preserved medieval castle complexes in Germany. In 1530 Luther took refuge and lived here for six months. After late lunch, continue to Eisenach to visit the magnificent UNESCO World Heritage Wartburg Castle. Here Luther found refuge during his exile and translated the New Testament from Greek into German. Take a look at the spartan room he lived and worked in. This morning, we visit St. George¡¯s Church where St. Elisabeth was married and J.S. Bach baptized. If time permit, we will tour the Luther House where Luther lived as a student with the Cotta family from 1498-1501 and the Luther exhibition documenting his life and theologies and also visit Bach House. After time for lunch, we continue to Erfurt, the spiritual home of Martin Luther. It was here that Luther obtained a degree in 1502 and a doctorate in philosophy in 1505 and where he took the decisive step to turn to theology and the monastic life. Your walking tour begins in the historical section of the city including St. Mary¡¯s Cathedral, where Luther was ordained as a priest, the Augustinian Monastery with a permanent exhibit depicting Luther¡¯s life as a monk in Erfurt. Take a glimpse at the small ¡°cell¡±, where Luther lived during his stay in the monastery. and to the church of St. Severus, where Luther preached his sermons. Overnight Erfurt. (B/D)
This morning, we visit Buchenwald Concentration Camp where Dietrich Bonhoeffer was imprisoned. We continue to Weimar, the city of Schiller and Goethe and visit the Herder church, with its famous Cranach altar. After lunch, we then continue to Eisleben, where Luther was born and died. Visit St. Andrews Church where Luther preached his last four sermons and where his body was laid in state. Discover the houses, where he took his first and his last breath. We depart Eisleben to go Wittenberg, the main workplace of Martin Luther. You visit the temporary Luther exhibition at the Augusteum (Luther Hall is currently closed for renovations). Luther Hall is the Augustinian monastery where Luther lived as a monk and later, in 1525, as owner with his wife and family (Luther Hall is the largest museum of Reformation history in the world), the Market Square and Town Hall; tour All Saints Church ¡°Schlosskirche¡±, famous site where Luther posted his 95 Theses on the Castle Church door sparking the beginning of the Reformation (it is here that Luther is buried alongside his fellow reformer, (Philipp Melanchthon) visit Melanchthon House in Wittenberg; tour St. Mary¡¯s Church, where Luther did the majority of his preaching. This morning after breakfast we depart to Berlin and after lunch we will visit the remaining Berlin Wall, continue to Reichstag with a guide and walk the spacious glass dome to enjoy fantastic view of the city, next is visit the city¡¯s most beautiful plaza, the Gendarmenmarkt, gorgeously framed by the German and French cathedrals. Then we will go to Berlin Airport to fly back to Singapore. (B)
