This mission trip to the Philippines was truly an eye-opening experience. It was my first time seeing the Filipino culture up close, and I learnt many things that I will always remember. In Cebu, I noticed that the rich are extremely wealthy, but the poor are extremely impoverished. This showed me how much people need God’s love and the salvation that comes from Christ. Life is more than material things. What people really need is the hope and freedom that only Jesus can give.
During the trip, I also saw many people who serve God faithfully in the church and community without getting paid. Their dedication made me reflect on myself. I asked, “If I were in their situation, would I still be willing to follow and serve God?” This taught me that true service comes from the heart, not from money or comfort. It challenged me to think more deeply about my own calling and my willingness to obey God fully.
I often felt humbled throughout the trip. I am just an ordinary person, but I am thankful that God brought me there to serve. Even though I felt like I was “nothing”, the people treated our team with so much warmth, honour, and respect. Their kindness reminded me that God values His people, and how he can use anyone who is willing to obey him. I am also very grateful to our team leader, Dr. Richard Ong, for his clear guidance and steady leadership throughout the trip. His direction helped us stay focused, work together, and serve with the right heart.
One highlight for me was spending time with the children. They were very welcoming, active, and responsive. When I did storytelling for them, I felt nervous at first, but their smiles, excitement, and participation made me feel encouraged and happy. Their simple joy reminded me of how beautiful childlike faith is. I also enjoyed the food and friendliness of the Filipino community.
Another meaningful part of the trip was the friendship within our team. Serving together helped us grow closer, and our bond became stronger each day. We supported one another, prayed together, and shared our thoughts every night. I believe that without this mission trip, we would not have developed this kind of friendship.
This trip taught me many important lessons about faith, humility, and service. I learnt that God can use anyone, including someone like me who feels small or unimportant. What he wants is a willing and obedient heart. I also became more aware of the needs of others and how powerful simple acts of love can be.
Overall, the Cebu mission trip was a very meaningful and valuable experience. I am thankful that God gave me the chance to serve, to learn, and to grow. I hope to continue serving him with a humble and willing heart in the future.
