Do you want to renew your thinking on current issues or update your theological training?

Every semester, SOTE makes a selection of our courses available to alumni and interested individuals without requiring them to be currently enrolled in an SBC programme.

Whether you are our alumni or have not taken any of our postgraduate programmes, you are welcome to register for these electives at the School of Theology English.

Asian Church History

This course traces the history of the church in Asia from the early church until modern times. Particular attention is given to Asian church history in the 19th and 20th centuries, the era of colonialism and nationalism, when many national churches were established and revival movements took place. As part of the course, students will research the history of the church or key figures in a country of their choice.

李东俊博士

Dr. Justin Lee is Associate Professor of Systematic and Historical Theology. He has been teaching at SBC since 2019. Originally trained in historical theology, Dr. Justin also researches and writes in the area of contextual theology and mission, especially in Asian theology. He writes in areas of Church Fathers and Origen and is currently completing a monograph on Asian theological methodology.

Equipping Churches to respond in a VUCA/BANI World (Capstone Course)

This course highlights socio-cultural phenomena and issues that have both global as well as local impact on society, church, and home. It seeks to offer informed and integrated responses to these issues by examining them with multidisciplinary lenses in the different settings and contexts that they are situated in.

Dr. Samuel Law

Dr. Samuel Law is Associate Professor for Intercultural Studies and the Dean of Advanced Studies, the Pastor-at-Large for the Evangelical Chinese Church of Seattle, and the Eastern Asia Hub Director for Durham University’s ECLASproject.org project. He has authored one book, co-edited two others, and published more than 35 articles and abstracts.

Intergenerational Church: Biblical, Theological, and Practical Perspectives

In Singapore, younger and older generations often journey in faith separately, creating gaps in discipleship and weakening spiritual formation. This course provides biblical, theological, and practical resources to build intergenerational communities that strengthen discipleship, deepen unity, and enhance the church’s witness to society.

庄秉俊博士

Professor of Practical Theology and has been teaching at SBC since 1995. He is currently driving the community engagement work at SBC, which seeks to equip and support church leaders, congregations, and service providers in their ministries to and by seniors. He serves on the ExCo of the Methodist School of Music and is an active volunteer in community music programmes, events, and outreaches.

Dr. Chang Chian Hui

Associate Professor of Practical Theology. He has been teaching at SBC since 2022. Before coming to SBC, Dr. Chang served in pastoral ministry for over three decades. He also served as an Executive-Director of a Youth and Family Counselling Center for 10 years while serving as an Honorary Pastor at a Presbyterian Church in Singapore.

Dr. Thang Leng Leng

Associate Professor, Department of Japanese Studies, NUS, and President of the Gerontological Society of Singapore.

Mr. Ho Wei Hao

Wei Hao is co-author of the book: “The Generations Project - Bridging Generational Divides in the Singapore Church”. In his working life, he had spent time in the Social Work and Civil Service sectors and is now involved in a few different vocations concurrently, which includes adjunct lecturing at a local seminary.

New Testament Studies II

New Testament Studies II introduces students to the historical, socio-political and literary contexts in which Pauline epistles were produced. It will also explore the Second Temple period and develop skills for interpreting the epistles, so that students can be equipped for further theological training, spiritual formation, and ministry reflection.

PREREQUISITES:

  • For credit: New Testament Foundations?
  • For audit: No requirement

Dr. Oh Boon Leong

Dr. Oh Boon Leong serves as Senior Pastor of Mount Carmel Bible-Presbyterian Church. He has previously taught New Testament studies at Biblical Graduate School of Theology and Trinity Theological College.

Old Testament Exegesis II (Psalms and Prophets)

This Hebrew exegesis course develops students’ ability to interpret Old Testament poetic texts, with a specific focus on the Psalter and the prophetic book of Habakkuk. It includes an introduction to the literary and discourse analysis of Hebrew poetry. Students will deepen their skills in understanding these texts within their biblical literary, historical, and theological context, as well as applying them in a contemporary sociocultural setting.

PREREQUISITE:

  • Biblical Hebrew II

Prof. Ernst Wendland

Ernst Wendland, PhD, former instructor at Lusaka Lutheran Seminary and UBS Bible Translation Consultant, is professor extraordinary at Stellenbosch University (Ancient Studies) and is an adjunct professor at South African Theological Seminary. His research and writing interests include aspects of Bible translation, Biblical Hebrew poetry, and Bantu literature in SE Africa.

* Credit course participants can earn credit units that are transferable to our programmes. No credit/s will be awarded for audit class takers.

  1. 若特别生申请课程,他/她可把那时所修的学分转入课程。顶限为12学分;且不能超过所申请的课程的总学分三分之一。修读教牧学博士的特別生可将1学期转入教牧学博士课程。
